Multiple Teams · Girls Basketball recaps

The Woodhaven lady warriors traveled to the Detroit Country Day Roundball classic over the holiday break playing two exciting games and gaining valuable experience against two tough teams. In their first game the Warriors faced 2012 state final powerhouse Grosse Point South. GP South came in to the game with two of the best players in the classic as well as a deep and talented roster in support.  The two teams fought like two heavy weights trading big punches and when the smoke cleared the scoreboard showed a tie game at the half.  A tough third quarter proved deadly for Woodhaven as South pulled out to an 11 point lead. The Warriors came back with big baskets and rebounds to cut the lead to 6 in the 4th. In the end it was too little too late as GP held on to earn a 49-41 victory. Brianna Brennan, Cassie Breen and Whitley Currie bled Woo purple scoring 12, 9 and 7 respectively. Allison Manning fought out 7 courageous points, Erica Marvaso came in and hit a huge triple just at the right time and Salina Shubik along with Hailey Leidel each added a basket to the total.
The second contest didn’t get much easier. The girls faced a tough, talented and physical Detroit Pershing team and came together big to beat the Doughgirls 56 to 39.  Brianna Brennan played her best game of the season scoring 21 points and grabbing16 rebounds. Cassie Breen managed the floor and tamed aggressive defenders with great ball control scoring 9, rebounding 6 and dishing out 5 assists. Allison Manning brought another solid game to the contest scoring 8 and getting 4 boards. Hailey Liedel and Salina Shubik each added 5 critical points to the effort. Natalie Frensley and Lyndsay Brennan both hit tres, and Steph Suter hit a couple from the stripe finishing with 2. Next game’s a big one as league rival Southgate comes to play at Woodhaven on Tuesday January 8th game time is 7pm. Go Warriors!!
